Lennox

I relax in the backseat, safely concealed inside the heavily tinted windows, as Nathan navigates through LA traffic to get back to my place.

“Is anyone expecting you anywhere tonight?” he asks, parking in my private driveway.

“No,” I say softly. “I asked Jen to clear everything. She’s heading back to her apartment downtown for the night. She’ll be back over tomorrow to get ready for the premiere.”

Nate hops out of the car and opens the back door for me as I unbuckle my seatbelt and grab my bag. “Is that smart? Attending the premiere after this, and with dickhead still on the loose?”

The floodlights on the house turned on the second we neared the house. Nathan’s concerned face is highlighted by the bright lights. “I won’t let him take this night from me. I won’t do it, Nate.”

“I’m just saying—”

“Well, don’t.” I turn away and stalk toward the house, suddenly and inexplicably angry. “You’re not the only professional.”

“What does that mean?”

Inside, the house is completely empty. Rose came that morning to prepare food for the next few days and tidy up, then took the rest of the day to visit her daughter and granddaughter. I grab a bottle of red wine from the mounted rack on the wall and yank open a drawer, searching for a corkscrew. I don’t know why I’m so angry all of a sudden.

Nathan comes to the island and stands across from me. He braces his palms on the marble surface. “What,” he repeats, “is that supposed to mean?”

I feel my mouth tighten as I try to keep sudden, violent tears from exploding out of me. I don’t answer him until I’ve poured a generous mouthful of wine into a glass and knocked it back.

“It means that you’ve made it very clear the only reason you’re here is for the job.” I pour another mouthful. Why am I bothering with a glass?

He draws his head back. “Yes. You hired me, Lennox. You paid a fee to our firm like everyone else who hires us. What is there to be pissed off about?”

It takes everything in me not to throw the glass. “I’m pissed off that you’re acting like you feel nothing!” I cry. “That all those years in the past are just…all those years in the past.”

An impassive mask drops over his features. “What should they be, if not just that?”

Hot tears spring to my eyes. “You’re a cold-hearted bastard, you know that?”

“Me? I’m the cold-hearted bastard?” He steps around the island to my side. “Lennox, do you hear yourself? If memory serves correctly, you were the one who left me. You were the one who decided her dreams had no room for love too. You turned your back on me and all those years because something better came along.”

“This was my dream!” I yell back. “My dream, Nathan. You’re the one who made it a dream-versus-you thing. It didn’t have to be that way!”

“Oh, so this is my fault now?” He crosses his arms. “It’s not like you ever came back.
